Johnny Radelat: Less is Everything

Johnny Radelat: Less is Everything

You don't need a mountain of drums to make a whole lot of noise. Just ask Johnny Radelat. The Cuban-American drummer's career has taken him around the world, from a decade-long partnership with Grammy-winning blues-rock powerhouse Gary Clark Jr. to his current role with platinum-selling alternative rock icons +LIVE+. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, and raised in Miami, Johnny grew up absorbing an unlikely mix of punk rock, metal, reggae, soul and funk. From the raw energy of Led Zeppelin and The Clash to the deep grooves of Al Jackson Jr. and Carlton Barrett, his influences were as varied as they were powerful. It was a musical education that taught him one thing early on: there's no single right way to play the drums, but there's a big difference between playing the notes and making people feel them.

Johnny's journey took him through garage bands, school marching band and years of playing everything from reggae and R&B to punk rock before he eventually found his way to Austin, Texas. It was a move that would prove to be a turning point. Immersed in a scene where musical boundaries were there to be blurred and the groove always came first, Johnny teamed up with Gary Clark Jr. in 2011, beginning a partnership that would take them around the world. From intimate clubs and festival main stages to appearances on Saturday Night Live, Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman and Ellen, Johnny's unmistakable blend of heavy-hitting rock energy and deep-pocket soul became a vital part of the band's live sound. It was raw, spontaneous and driven by a shared belief that the best moments in music aren't always the ones you plan.

Over the years, Johnny has taken that unmistakable feel to some of the biggest stages in the world. His musical journey includes working with artists such as Emily Wolfe and The Last Internationale, making guest appearances behind the kit with the house band on Late Night with Seth Meyers and sharing stages with the likes of The Rolling Stones and Robert Plant. Since 2024, he's been touring internationally and recording new music with '90s alternative rock heroes +LIVE+. But for all the miles travelled and stages conquered, Johnny's approach has remained refreshingly uncomplicated. He's known for stripping his setup back to the essentials, sometimes playing with little more than a kick, snare, hi-hats and a single cymbal. No unnecessary distractions. No hiding behind the hardware. Just a drummer, a groove and the kind of energy that makes every hit palpable.

For Johnny, great music has never been about perfection. It's about honesty, personality and having the confidence to leave space where others might feel the need to fill it. That philosophy runs through everything he does, from the loose spontaneity of a live performance to the subtle details that give a simple groove its character. It's an approach that feels right at home with the heritage and individuality of Rogers Drums, where timeless character and musical expression go hand in hand. Johnny's sound is a reminder that sometimes the most powerful statement is also the simplest. You don't need to play everything to say something. Less to prove. More to feel. All in the moment.
