Johnny Keefe: For the Love of Loud

Johnny Keefe: For the Love of Loud

Long before the sold-out tours, gold records and crowds singing every word, Johnny Keefe was just a kid from Massachusetts making noise in a barn. Growing up on a farm outside Boston, Johnny picked up the drums at fourteen and quickly found himself caught up in the energy of the local music scene. Backyard shows, bowling alleys, DIY tours and whatever stage he could get his kit onto became his training ground. There was nothing polished or predictable about it, just a love of playing loud, hanging out with friends and chasing the kind of feeling that only live music can deliver. Those early days built something that would stick with him: a connection to music that's as much about the people and the experience as it is about the songs themselves.

That spirit became the foundation of Boys Like Girls, the band Johnny helped form in 2005 alongside Martin Johnson, Paul DiGiovanni and Bryan Donahue. What started in the suburbs of Boston soon took on a life of its own, with a sound that mixed infectious pop hooks, driving guitars and the raw energy of the growing emo and pop-punk scene. Their self-titled debut in 2006 brought breakthrough tracks like "The Great Escape" and "Thunder", while 2009's Love Drunk pushed them into another league. Suddenly, the band that had cut its teeth on small local stages was playing to audiences around the world. Through it all, Johnny's powerful, instinctive drumming helped give those songs the energy and momentum that made them impossible to forget.

But Johnny's story doesn't stop with Boys Like Girls. Over the years, he's taken his experience into the studio, contributing to recordings and projects with artists including Taylor Swift, Daughtry, Christina Perri and Dashboard Confessional. His versatility has allowed him to move between styles without losing the character that makes his playing his own. And when Boys Like Girls returned with Sunday at Foxwoods in 2023, it marked a new chapter for a band whose friendships had outlasted changing trends and time away from the spotlight. Older, wiser and with plenty more stories to tell, Johnny and his bandmates brought a fresh perspective to the music while holding onto the energy that started it all.

For Johnny, it's always been about more than the drums. It's about the friendships forged on the road, the connection with an audience and the feeling of being part of something bigger than yourself. From a barn outside Boston to stages across the world, that love for music has never faded. Behind the kit, he brings a combination of hard-earned experience, unmistakable energy and an attitude that refuses to take the fun out of playing. It's the kind of spirit that feels right at home with Rogers Drums, where individuality and character have always mattered. Because some things don't need reinventing. Good friends. Great music. Turn it up and mean every note.
